Fresno State has "mutually agreed" to part ways with Director of Athletics Terry Tumey. In a statement from President Saúl Jiménez-Sandoval, he states Tumey is leaving "to pursue other opportunities." For the immediate future, Deputy Director of Athletics Rob Acunto will take over as the interim Director of Athletics. Tumey was AD at Fresno State from 2018-2024, ending his 6-year tenure.
This all comes suspiciously close to the disastrous Justin Hutson situation.
I have mixed emotions about this move... On one hand, Tumey has been an incredible Athletic Director. He has truly elevated the athletics of Fresno State. Tumey was instrumental in hiring some amazing coaches, such as Leisa Rosen and Kalen DeBoer just to name a few.
On the other hand, HERE WE ARE.
We're still in the Mountain West.
We don't have a Basketball Coach.
Measure E has failed TWICE!
There've been minimal facility upgrades.
I believe the failure of Measure E has more to do with this news than most want to admit.
Whoever it may be, the next Athletics Director certainly has their work cut out for them. Fresno State must search far and wide for someone who can not only lead this department but instill trust and connect with the valley community.
