2024 - Week 1 - at Michigan Wolverines
An unranked and underdogged Fresno State team entered THE BIG HOUSE on Saturday night to take on the defending National Champions, #9 Michigan Wolverines.
FINAL SCORE: Michigan 30, Fresno State 10
- (1) DO NOT DOUBT THIS DEFENSE
For three quarters, the Bulldogs' defense held Michigan to just 13 points. This game was expected to be a blowout, but Fresno State's defense defied expectations, proving they could hang with future NFL talent on Michigan's offensive line. At one point, the Bulldogs trailed by just six points in the fourth quarter. I can't begin to express how proud I am of this team and the heart they displayed in front of a national audience on NBC.
- (2) KEENE CAN'T FIND HIS RHYTHM
Mikey Keene struggled to find his groove last night. His passes often missed their marks, and the lack of a strong run game or pass protection didn't help. When he had opportunities, Keene appeared nervous, leading to missed throws and tipped balls, including one that resulted in an interception. The offensive play-calling, especially in the first quarter and late in the fourth, left much to be desired, often making me question what we were trying to achieve. If the O-line could have given Keene just a little more time, the outcome might have been different.
Despite the challenges, Keene showed flashes of brilliance. After facing what is likely the toughest defense he'll see all season, I believe he'll improve and excel as the season progresses. He just needs to work on his footwork and accuracy. He's our QB1, and I can't wait to see him get his revenge in the playoffs.
Former Quarterback Jake Haener had a mid game message for Keene on X.
- (3) FANS QUESTION TIMEOUTS
Just before halftime, Coach Skipper opted not to use any timeouts, content to head to the locker room down by six points. He didn't want to risk another turnover. Many fans took to social media to express their frustration with the clock management, unhappy with the decision to play it safe. While I understand the temptation to go on the attack, especially in a close game, taking unnecessary risks against Michigan could have backfired. Unfortunately, my fears of a pick-six came true later in the fourth quarter.
- (4) MOSS GON' MOSS
Sophomore Jalen Moss continues to prove he's the heartbeat of the wide receiver corps. As the game progresses, Moss only gets stronger, consistently finding ways to outmaneuver defenses. He's not afraid to battle defensive backs and fight through coverage, showing a natural instinct for the ball and a keen sense of reading defenses. I wouldn't be surprised if teams start double-teaming him to try and slow him down.
- (5) LET TIM COOK
Interim Head Coach Tim Skipper has done an outstanding job leading this team. It's no easy feat to travel across the country to the third-largest sports venue in the world and keep the defending National Champions on their heels for most of the game. The nation was taken aback as our defense consistently frustrated Michigan's offense.
Tim is a natural leader. He's the first to congratulate the players as they come off the field after a big stop, and his passion for this team is evident. He's exactly what we need to win the conference and make a push for the playoffs.
I believe. #LetTimCook
